The Boeing 777 commercial airliner, headed for Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam, went down about 25 miles from the Russian border in Ukraine — sending a plume of smoke into the sky after crashing, authorities said.
All aboard, including a reported 23 American passengers, were presumed dead.
The Wall Street Journal, quoting U.S. intelligence officials, reported the doomed flight was targeted with the missile fired from somewhere in the volatile region.
Shattered bodies, burning luggage and crumpled wreckage from the doomed flight were scattered across a massive nine-mile debris field, with graphic and gruesome pictures appearing on Twitter.
“We are not calling it an accident or a disaster, but an act of terrorism,” he said, calling for an international investigation.
The Ukrainian government reportedly has recordings of intercepted calls between Russian intelligence and terrorist discussing the “shoot-down” of a Malaysia Airlines jet, according to CNN.
“We have just shot down a plane,” said a Russian military officer in a translation of the chatter made public by Ukraine officials.
